Narrative
BARTHOLOMEW COUNTY, IN – A collision at a rural intersection east of downtown Columbus Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of a 51-year-old woman and seriously injured two other people.
The fatal accident happened at County Road East 100 South and South 525 East, just over 10 minutes driving distance east of the city. Sheriff’s office deputies responded to the scene shortly after 4:00 p.m.
According to officials, a woman from Greensburg was driving a Chevrolet Impala and was traveling with a 47-year-old male passenger, also of Greensburg. Preliminary details indicate the woman had failed to stop the car at a stop sign at the intersection when they were involved in a crash with a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 21-year-old Bedford man.
Following the wreck, which left all three involved occupants trapped in their vehicles, the passenger of the Impala and the driver of the pickup were transported by helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for “significant and severe injuries.”
The driver of the Impala died from her injuries at the scene.
An investigation continues to be carried out by the Bartholomew County Accident Reconstruction Team, but drugs and alcohol do not appear to have contributed to the collision.
