Narrative
MARION COUNTY, IN – A crash involving at least two semi-trucks Thursday night in south Indianapolis claimed the life of a 9-year-old boy and left at least two people, including another child, injured.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office said the wreck occurred on the eastbound side of I-465, between U.S. Route 31 and South Meridian Street, on July 25.
Authorities said a driver in a semitractor-trailer neglected to slow down as it approached a traffic backup during rush-hour traffic. It ultimately collided with three cars and at least one other semi.
The boy, who was a passenger in the backseat of one impacted car, died as a result of his injuries. From that vehicle, first responders rushed the driver and one other occupant, a 5-year-old girl, to an area hospital. Officials indicated that their injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
No other major injuries were reported following the multi-vehicle crash. Investigators said that while drugs and alcohol are not suspected factors in the accident, excessive speed by the first semi-driver and “non compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Regulations allotted hours of service” are believed to be factors.
