Narrative
LAKE COUNTY, IN – One person lost their life last Thursday afternoon, April 4, following a crash involving two semi-trucks on the Borman Expressway in Hammond.
The fatal wreck took place on the eastbound lanes (Interstate 80/94) at the Columbia Avenue overpass, in an area between Calumet Avenue and Indianapolis Boulevard.
An early investigation indicates a Kia was rear-ended by a semi-truck, which pushed the car underneath another tractor-trailer ahead.
First responders rushed to the scene to extricate multiple people from the car, which was left seriously mangled between the big rigs.
One passenger from the Kia was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and a child passenger from the car were transported to an area hospital for major injuries believed to be life-threatening.
A section of the eastbound interstate was shut down for hours during the response and investigation, causing delays in both directions for the remainder of the afternoon and into the evening.
