Narrative
PUTNAM COUNTY, IN – A crash involving an Indiana Department of Corrections (IDOC) van Wednesday afternoon, July 31, in Greencastle sent four people to an area hospital by medical helicopter.
The collision unfolded on a stretch of U.S. Route 231 at Jackson Street, at about 4:00 p.m.
An investigation by Indiana State Police troopers indicates that a 47-year-old Greencastle man was driving a 2024 GMC pickup truck northbound when he veered into the southbound lane, causing the GMC to collide head-on with the IDOC van.
Officials said the van, which was operated by a 31-year-old correctional officer, was also occupied by an inmate as well as another officer.
Both drivers and both passengers were taken by airlift to an area hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to ISP.
Multiple local agencies assisted at the scene.
